*** Mariah Carey's 1997 Interview With Tabitha Soren *** - MARIAH UNPLUGGED - TABITHA SOREN: When I listened to the record, I felt like I... I mean yes, there were some very sweet love songs on there, but I felt like there were a lot of songs about hot dates, and big crushes, and hot guys, and making out on the roof -- MARIAH CAREY: Did I say anything about hot guys? SOREN: -- And getting between the sheets... I mean... (Mariah laughs) I thought that this was going to be a lonely summer of you separating. And I listened to this record and I'm like, "Wait a minute, I'm confused." CAREY: Well, I think the album reflects a lot of different moods. I don't think it's all of a sudden, "Wooo! Here I am! Wild, sexy chick." SOREN: That's true, there are some ballads on there, but those are about kisses that you can't forget, too, you know. CAREY: Right. SOREN: So, what's the inspiration? I guess that's what I'm saying. CAREY: We have to keep some things secret. But you know what is crazy is, since this whole, my whole change has come about, every single time work with someone, or bump into someone in a hallway, or like... SOREN: The change not being menopause, the change being the separation from your husband. CAREY: Well, I should hope not, babe! SOREN: Well, that's how people refer to "the change." CAREY: Oh, oh, it is? I don't even think about that! Since the whole, the personal changes with my life, and all that stuff, and people looking at me as like, this single chick or whatever, you know, every time I work with someone, meet someone, take a picture with someone at a charity event, or bump into someone in a hallway, there's a picture that I'm romantically linked, and it's pretty funny to me, because I've never been in this situation before. SOREN: Q-Tip hasn't been making the moves on you? CAREY: Oh, please with the Q-Tip thing! I am friends with Q-Tip! This is so ridiculous. He and I are both just like, "What is the deal with this?" Every other second there's something written like, "Did you know that Q-Tip was behind..." And, I'm like, we worked together, we did the first single. Now, I'm fair game for people to speculate about who's sleeping with this one and that one, and I never, I never realized how crazy that could be. SOREN: Don't you think the lyrics on this record are only going to cause more speculation about your love life? I don't know, maybe my mind's in the gutter. CAREY: Well... Your mind is in the gutter, Tabitha! And I can't help that. SOREN: What's the song "Honey" about? CAREY: What's it about? Honey. No, I'm just kidding. SOREN: It's not a euphemism for anything? (Awkward silence) All right, I just didn't know if you were getting really raunchy. CAREY: I'm getting totally raunchy here, man. No, I'm not raunchy. MTV: While a parental advisory sticker might not be necessary, she is writing more sexual lyrics as evidenced by the song "Babydoll," which Mariah co-wrote with Missy Elliott. CAREY: The really cool thing about Missy is that she's just so down to earth. She's like, "Okay, let's get together and work." We went into the hotel room and wrote the song, had a little champagne -- that's where some of the lyrics were inspired by -- but um... SOREN: So, the "between the sheets" lyrics you're blaming on her. CAREY: Well, we were in a hotel room and we were looking at the bed. I mean, we were sitting on the couch. Whatever. I like to leave my lyrics open so that the fans can apply... SOREN: Right. Okay. Right. Interpret them themselves. Right. CAREY: Exactly. You've heard that one before? SOREN: Yeah, I have. SOREN: Tell me what it was like to work with Bone Thugs , and how you learned to sing like them, because it sounds like that would be really difficult. CAREY: Okay, I worked with Krazie and Wishbone, of Bone Thugs, and I was totally inspired by their style, first of all. I mean it's obvious when you hear the song. And we had quite the interesting recording session. SOREN: Meaning what? CAREY: It was just, it was interesting. SOREN: You keep making these allusions to stuff that went on. "It was interesting"... CAREY: No, it was great. I loved them, I loved them. But I was having an allergy attack. I was having a little problem, and the studio was kind of smoky and things were going on. MTV: Another of Mariah's collaborations was a duet with Dru Hill, a cover of the Prince song "The Beautiful Ones". SOREN: Were you a huge "Purple Rain" fan when you were younger? CAREY: Yes. My friends and I went to see "Purple Rain" oh, numerous times. SOREN: I think I wore a lot of bad fashion during that period. How about you? CAREY: A lot of people wanted to be Prince in my school, you know. SOREN: You've got kind of an Appalonia getup on today. CAREY: I do? SOREN: Kinda. CAREY: Next question. (They both laugh). SOREN: You were saying something about you were just getting around to acting, you're just getting around to so many things in your life that you haven't had time for in the past. I also get the feeling that you're just getting around to really enjoying your youth. And I feel like you're really making an effort to start having fun in life. CAREY: I'm trying to. I just got done with the album a week ago, and the problem is, when I go out, and you're in these smoky clubs and environments, it totally goes right to my throat. So the next day, I can't sing. So I'm like, "Wooo! I'm out!" I think I'm happy, singing up and down the club, and then the next day, I can't sing. So, you can go crazy and think there are no repercussions, but really, I have to be so careful of my (makes the quotation sign with her hands) "instrument." SOREN: Do you feel more at ease at this point in your life than you have perhaps in the last four or five years? CAREY: Mmm-hmm. Definitely. I feel more at ease about some things, and then, I don't know if I feel more vulnerable in some ways, but, I guess it's just that I'm more exposed to the world. SOREN: Because you are, at this point, separated from your husband? Exposed in that way? CAREY: Well, because of that, I'm much more fair game for all those little things that we were talking about, all the little comments, she's with this one, Puffy, Q-Tip, Donald Trump. SOREN: But that's all external stuff, how about internally? CAREY: It is all external, but it does effect you, because you have to be so self-protective with all this nonsense... SOREN: But I feel, at the same time, that hasn't stopped you from making major changes in your life. Like splitting with your manager, and your lawyer, and your husband. Do you feel like the image that those folks helped you create over the last couple years is not really what you want to be now? CAREY: Well, I think it was fitting for a time. And now, I'm just more comfortable in my own skin, where I can just be like, this is who I am. You like it? Good. You don't? Good-bye. SOREN: Well, I feel like that really shows. CAREY: Yeah, well, again, I think it's just learning about myself, and dealing with my feelings and stuff. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *** MARIAH QUOTES *** - "Any women operating within the genre are competing for radio play and chart space, but that's as far as it goes. BUTTERFLY! (1). HONEY "Puffy and I wanted to collaborate, do the first single. We were going back and forth with stuff, so I had songs I liked but I knew they weren't exactly what I wanted yet. The original idea for the loop that "Honey" is written on is a song called "Body Rock" by Trecherous Three. He played it for me over the phone and I was like, "That's it!" So I wrote the song on top of it and we all got together at Puffy's." (2). BUTTERFLY The "Fly Away" part was my original concept for the song...then I started working it a little further and I said, "This should really the title of the album and should be a ballad." I had already written most of it, but we worked it out. (3). MY ALL "There's so much of me that's gone into this album- more than any other record I've done. It's very personal. I wrote "My All" after I came back from Puerto Rico and I guess I was in that whole Spanish vibe...it's got a Latin feel to it." (4). THE ROOF "This is my favourite song from the album. I did it with the Trackmasters...they are really cool people. I had an idea to use a sample from one of my favourite records so I went to the guys and we put it together. There's only one version of the song on the album, but we're going to do a remix, hopefully with the guys who did the original." (5). FOURTH OF JULY "Fourth Of July" was one of the first songs that I wrote for the album and it's sort of like "Underneath The Stars", which was my favourite song from the last album. We were continuing in the 70's feel and lyrically I wanted to paint a picture, like when you listen to a song and listen to the lyrics. It's very visual in a lot of ways." (6). BREAKDOWN "I told Bone Thugs N Harmony that I wanted to work with them and they were like, "OK...". I think I shock people with the ideas I come up with, but I think it worked out really well. You know how you work constantly and then you don't realise when you're about to fall down because you're so wrapped up in what you're doing? That's where this song is coming from." (7). BABYDOLL "I wrote that with Missy Elliot and I really wanted to work with her because she's on the cutting edge of R&B. We wrote it in a hotel room, we were drinking champagne and she fell asleep during the writing session, so I had to finish it alone! (laughs)." (8). CLOSE MY EYES "I started writing that song four years ago. I was up at this farm where we used to go every weekend and I was actually in the bath tub. It was night, I was looking at the moon and it was just like this introspective little moment, thinking about my life and what I've been through. It's personal - it's about my life and childhood." (9). WHENEVER YOU CALL "It's more of a traditional style ballad like "Hero", I do so many different kinds of tracks on this album but I think it's good because I've maintained true to myself in terms of doing ballads, but still being able to do collaborations like with Bone Thugs N Harmony." (10). FLY AWAY "People have said that this track sounds very different to my others, but to me it sounds very close to "Fantasy" or something. It's not as high, so I'm singing more in my middle register for the verses. It's all about the vocal arrangement." (11). THE BEAUTIFUL ONES ""The Beautiful Ones" is my favourite Prince song ever. I've been toying with the idea of doing a Prince song for a long time. This song was the closest to where I'm at in this stage in my life. (12). OUTSIDE "The song "Outside" is...I mean, I always hate to get too specific because people could relate to it for a lot of different reasons. For me, it was about being multi-racial and feeling like I came from another planet because I never knew anyone in the exact same position as me. The experiences I've had just to make me feel like an outsider in a lot of ways. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - email comments/news/reviews/etc: daydream@sci.net.au - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *** Mariah has apparently approached Brandy to do a song, but she says, "It's not definate, we're both busy doing our own things right now." *** Whitney's in the next Diva's Live line up! "It seems as though I've always been... a stranger on the outside looking in." - Looking In, DAYDREAM (1996) THIS IS ME (C.Wright) Verse 1 It always seems, I can never be right. I'll never be, A pretty sight. Behind my mask, Behind that smile. Lays someone who, Hasn't been me for awhile. But now I am, Trully sick of hiding. And in these words, Are where I confide in. Chorus This is me, My mask has faded. I look in the mirror, Yet I am jaded. This is me, I must realise. I need to open my mind, And then my eyes. For this is me. Verse 2 It always seems, I'm in the wrong. I'm so sick of singing, That morbid song. Behind these walls, Behind my life. Lays an internal fear, That cuts like a knife. But now I am, Trully sick of hiding. And in these words, Are where I confide in. Repeat Chorus This is me, I must realise. I need to open my mind, And then my eyes. For this is me. Bridge And I will pray, Every single day. Someone will hold my hand, And wash my tears away. I have insecurities, I'm sick of hiding... And I need someone That I can confide in. Chorus 2 This is me, I must realise. I need to open my mind, And then my eyes. For this is me. This is me, I must realise. I need to open my heart, And then my eyes- For this is me. Outro This is me, I open myself to you. Open your heart, And let the warmth come through. In a world where, Acceptance is rare. I just need somebody, To care...
